Field of Dreaming by Christina Watka
Mica, colored acrylic and stainless-steel chains

In Field of Dreaming, artist Christina Watka uses reflective materials to explore light and express quiet, intimate wonder. Expanding 30 feet across while hovering 12 feet above the lobby, the 150 strands of mica and softly colored acrylic act as a soft, scintillant wink of turning light to draw the viewer into a single moment. The delicate tendrils cascade from the ceiling in repetitive, meditative motions, gently turning with the air and flow of people in the room. So much of the work is about the overall large-scale impact, but there are unlimited small moments of discovery and wonder inside.

Christina Watka’s work connects people with the changing light in an hour, a day, or a season, and therefore connects them to themselves wherever they are. This work promises growth and change, knowing that someone may visit the space multiple times throughout the year. Notice how the cast shadows are longer in the winter and shorter in the summer. See how the light outside on a sunny day brings a bright series of bursting reflections and moves them slowly around the wall. Listen to the air in the room, turning the art on a hot day. These things are small and important. The perfect art piece to accompany someone waiting for a family member or friend or someone on their way to an appointment, this work is meant to encourage a sense of ease and delight.

Christina creates joyful, dynamic spaces by reflecting the natural interplay between light, density, movement, and people. Her work can be found across the globe including the Mandarin Oriental Palace in Luzern, Switzerland, Address Skyview in Dubai, recently renovated Dior showroom in Sydney, Australia, the JP Morgan building in Houston, TX built by I.M. Pei Architects, and TETRA hotel in Sunnyvale, CA.
