Statement

In this exhibition I’m presenting nine handbuilt nonfired paperclay mache vessels made from a mixture of clay and recycled culled library books and handmade paper made from discarded clothing. Adorned on the surface are hand drawn illustrations through a collaboration with artist Mallory Wetherell. The drawings are specific herbs that have a historical and pronounced benefit to health and healing. (Ceramics has a long history of using the surface of the vessel form to use plant motifs as decoration and as symbol for vitality, identity and presence). The handmade pulp paintings are made from plant based discarded clothing (linen and cotton). Layered and collaged until plant motifs rise to the surface. The video is made by Joseph Plante of New Media Storytellers and Lori Pedrick and highlights a narrative of my connection to the plant world, a statement of commitment to the celebration of vitality found in growth.

This specific exhibition celebrates the history of apothecary, medicinal plants, the connection to nature as an essential element to health, and an emphasis of beauty that builds and bridges the connection between humans and the natural world.
